Black History Month of 2023 was a busy one. From Real Talk Industry Discussions to emotionally charged movies, to conversations about African American History with friends and family, It has been a journey.
I dove head first into something I don't think I was quite ready for. But who is really ever ready for a journey? This February, I decided to acknowledge the contributions of several different artists, writers, actors, and activists that have made a point to document, express, or advocate for black experiences and achievements.
I started off the month with the Documentary " I Am Not Your Negro" Released in 2017 and voiced by the acting legend Samuel L. Jackson, which I was very surprised to hear as the Narrator for this genre.
This PG-13 documentary directed by Raoul Peck was released in 2016 and focuses on "James Baldwin's attempt to tell his story of America through the lives of three of his murdered friends", however, Baldwin did not make it past 30 pages of notes". To view this documentary, to my surprise, it is free on YouTube with ads. I highly recommend giving it your time, to Watch it Free with ads, <<Click The Image Below>>.
Topics of discussion I had to address during the last month range in depth. One topic I had to discuss is why Black History Month is important and why it should continue to be celebrated.
Let it be clear that I am Black every day of the year not just during black history month, however, we have come a long way and that deserves to be celebrated. I would not have the education I have, the opportunities I have had or the freedoms we all benefit from today if it were not for the literal blood, sweat, and sacrifices of men and women during the Civil Rights Movement.

Furthermore, Black History month is one of inclusion: a celebration of how far we have come but also one of acceptance that there is still work that needs to be done.
Things I've had to accept this Month are: Rest is work, Artist and Advocates do not rush their work and the reason for that shows in their work. I tried to rush through movies and books to write reviews before the 28th day of February but the topics that are addressed in my selected media are ones that a person has to take a moment to digest.
{{Pictures Produced by the Film: Lady Sings the Blues and United States Vs. Billie Holiday}}
For example. Singer Billie Holiday has two films that attempt to grasp her life. I'm furious at how the original film hides or does not disclose certain facts that the second film addresses in more detail. A full review is coming to a screen near you.
Just Mercy is a heavy hitter as it is based on true events that took place in 1989. The book was published in 2014. I was first introduced to the heroism of Attorney Bryan Stevenson in 2017 and a movie about his hard work within the Alabama justice system was released in September 2019 in the middle of the Covid-19 Pandemic. When this movie hit theaters, Covid slowed ticket sales to a halt as theaters began to close their doors. A review of the similarities and differences between the book and the movie will be published here soon
Most of my February was watching and researching scenes throughout Donald Glover's Hit series Atlanta. The show first aired in September 2016, I will be reviewing seasons 1-4 with a focus on the episodes that made me pause, stop or rewind the show. In any case, each episode is carefully crafted to demonstrate Donald Glover's a.k.a Childish Gambino's genius on various topics. I recommend watching each episode twice. There's one episode in particular that I don't recommend watching twice and the reasoning behind that can be found here On Inversed Media
Expect updates twice a month.
