"You" Vs. Dexter

<<<Plot & Cast>>>

Frankly, there is no comparison between the tv series Dexter and "You". Yes, the foundation is the same where the main character is a serial killer and from their perspective but that’s it and it’s a pretty thin foundation.

Spoilers ahead, please stop reading now if you haven’t started the series. The main character is Joe, who is a bookstore manager by day and obsessive stalker by night. The object of his affection is Guinevere Beck. I took it upon myself to view the Netflix show when it was recommended several times, however, I was not impressed.

The kill and disposal of Becks fling Benji was very unnecessary and unorganized when compared to Dexter. To make matters worse, Joe is unsure about his plan of action and how he’s going to carry out them out. He ends up acting on impulse, killing an innocent person when some idle threats could have made his problems disappear, and he got very close to getting caught several times. Watching Joe get dangerously close to being caught gave me anxiety which kind of worked as a method to keep me on the edge of my seat but was annoying.

14 Times Joe Almost Got Caught

Joe goes on to actually get the girl, however, when she stops by his place, he proceeds to lazily but skillfully, hide her stolen journal, panties, and phone. Which was just too close for me and too easy for Beck to find. Like, are you trying to get caught? or are you trying to accomplish something? because I'm trying to see the progression of the storyline. With these discoveries, I had to give the couple a break.

I had a friend ask me how the series was going and I told her the truth “I’m not that into it”. Her response is “It. Gets. Crazy. Keep watching”. With that I was back at the screen and low and behold, she was right.

But the feeling was short-lived and has earned my frustration, my anger, and my utmost annoyance.

Where do I even begin? The comparison to Dexter is so far off that I have to look at the show for what it is and that’s not much.

This rom-com takes killer and obsessive stalker to another level when it made the boyfriend and the best friend both madly in love with the same girl. Beck’s best friend Peach is played by Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell.

I enjoyed the little back and forth banter and character shots the two made at each other but I didn’t think joe would go as far as killing her.

I actually expected more of a battle between Peach, when joe discovered she survived a near-death experience. But, as said before, it was short-lived. After a couple episodes, Peach actually gets killed, Beck is so distraught she breaks up with Joe, and now it looks like everything Joe did was for absolutely nothing.

<<<<Third Season>>>>

I am really at a lost. I don’t know who to root for and the only reason this show still has my attention is that the writers snuck a new character in the mix that makes us ponder Joe’s past actions and next moves in season two.

Writers. You gotta hand it to them. If it weren’t for this new character, I would be long gone but they have me stuck wanting to know what's going to happen. But I digress, such feelings have made me want to read the book of the same name written by Caroline Kepnes. I might get some closure from that.

<<<Obsession>>>

The show is completely fictional however, events and actions in the show can come from or lead to domestic violence or other issues in the home. Today's poem from my L.O.T brings awareness to that very issue.

~Hands~

Lips zip tied shut. Hushed and silent

muzzled for quiet.

But painted skin tells no lies.

They make pictures,

Clear to see but not for eyes.

Cover them in smiles And fancy dress

To help you forget.

Next time, you’ll go for perfection

Aim high for more time

Add minutes to the patience

So maybe the clock wont tick

& The hand wont strike.

I try not to wince at your sigh

Your heavy step or slammed door.

Hope this time will be alright

Hope. Yeah, hold on to that.

Remember that word.

Stories of anguish, Stories of hurt,

Stories too much to take,

shouldn't bare the weight hands make.

~Hands~

Nice comparison of the two shows I like how you gave clear examples and explanations when comparing the two like when it came to Joe’s methods and how they were not executed as clear cleanly sometimes unlike the main charter on Dexter. I also liked how you incorporated poetry at the end which brings attention to the bigger issues of domestic violence. Nice job.

Thank you for your response! I’ll keep watching season two . It seems better but I’m kind of upset about the ending of season one. I would encourage you to keep watching for all the plot twists. And you might like season two more because it’s off to an interesting start.

Really enjoyed your insight! I'm curious about what you'll think of season 2. I haven't watched the latest season, but I've had friends unimpressed with it - and I've also seen a few video essays breaking down why certain things just don't work. That being said, I'm also interested in reading the original source material! I only got so far into the series - right when he and Beck finally hooked up, because it ultimately didn't grasp my attention. However, I feel like reading may make me more invested? I'm unsure!
